September 11 – Love Offering Day 11

This month we are doing a 30-day “Love Offering” study by Rachael Adams. Each day will have a verse of Scripture with an application, to not merely listen to God’s Word but DO what it says (James 1:22). From Rachael: “Time spent with God and time spent serving those around us, changes the condition of our own hearts in the process. Our faith in action creates a chain reaction of full hearts and eternal impacts.” Click HERE to visit the “Love Offering” website for more resources and a daily calendar of applications. Please use the comment section of our website to share your stories on what God is doing through the daily applications.

You can join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We are excited to be starting our 5th year of the Discover One Thing online study!

Scripture: 1 John 3:16 (Context vs. 11-24)

More on Love and Hatred

11 For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.

16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.

17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
19 This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20 If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22 and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him. 23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24 The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

Application: Do something nice for a single parent.

SOAP Note

Love Others | Rebecca Hoyt

Scripture

1 John 3:16

Observation

God is telling us that because He loves us, we should love others.

Application

Today we’re to help out a single parent. Vs 18 says let us not love in word or tongue, but in deed and in truth. I can say I’ll pray for that person but then I also need to show them love by my actions. At Thanksgiving we give a gift card from my husband’s work to someone in need at church.

Prayer

Dear Father, thank You for loving us, and because of your love we’re able to love others. Please help us find ways to show others they are loved today. Amen

  1. This passage (and particularly verse 17) has haunted me all week. I read the passage and example SOAP right after having a text conversation about a single mom in desperate need of life change. I know God is trying to tell me I need to be involved and do something, but I still don’t have an answer as to how or what. So I pray and wait for Him to reveal my next steps. I praise God for this eye-opening, heart-popping passage this week.
