September 22 – Love Offering Day 22

This month we are doing a 30-day “Love Offering” study by Rachael Adams. Each day will have a verse of Scripture with an application, to not merely listen to God’s Word but DO what it says (James 1:22). From Rachael: “Time spent with God and time spent serving those around us, changes the condition of our own hearts in the process. Our faith in action creates a chain reaction of full hearts and eternal impacts.” Click HERE to visit the “Love Offering” website for more resources and a daily calendar of applications. Please use the comment section of our website to share your stories on what God is doing through the daily applications.

You can join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We are excited to be starting our 5th year of the Discover One Thing online study!

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 9:7 (Context vs. 6-15)

Generosity Encouraged

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written:
“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;
    their righteousness endures forever.”
10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.
12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 13 Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14 And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

Application: Leave a big tithe or tip.

Apple Slices | Marianne Toovey

Scripture

2 Corinthians 9:7

Observation

Paul is urging the Corinthians to be generous with their resources. The need is great, and if they work to meet that need with a cheerful heart, God promises to generously provide for their needs as well. The same is still true today. The need is still great, but we can help. And if we choose to give cheerfully, God still promises to generously provide for us as well.

Application

Technically, today’s act of love is to leave a big tip. But since it lands on a Sunday (and since my family rarely eats out at table-service restaurants where tips would be customary) I choose to leave a big tithe at church instead. I once had a Sunday School lesson, that despite being over 20 years ago still sticks with me, go like this: If you core an apple and keep the slices for yourself to eat and toss the core to God, what happens when your apple slices are gone? How are you going to get another apple? But if you keep the core instead, and give the best parts of the apple to God, you’re then left with the resources to grow your own apple tree and the opportunity to continue being generous. Today, I’m giving God the slices – the best part of the apple. Who’s with me?!

Prayer

God, You promised that You would bless cheerful, generous giving and I trust You to fulfill that promise for all of us participating in this act of love today. I thank You for Your provision and for the resources that make today’s challenge possible. I pray our churches and communities will be blessed with this gift. I love You! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
