October 22 – God’s Promises Day 22

Join us in October as we do a 31-day theme study in God’s promises from the Bible. Shannon from the Sweet Blessings blog put this reading plan together. Check it out HERE.

You can join us in this study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Feel free to share your SOAP in the comments too! Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We are excited to be starting our 5th year of the Discover One Thing online study!

Scripture: Matthew 11:28-30 (context vs. 25-30)

The Father Revealed in the Son

25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
27 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Real Rest | Shiree King

Matthew 11:28-30

I attended a women’s retreat a few years ago where they walked through these verses from The Message Bible, and it was so impactful that I remembered and immediately pulled out my notes when I saw these verses again.  Using words from The Message, our reality is that we feel TIRED, WORN OUT, and BURNED OUT.  We expect that Jesus’s solution is to provide relief and “rest”; however, these 3 verses contain 7 action words for us to do: COME, GET AWAY, WALK, WORK, WATCH, LEARN, KEEP COMPANY.  Then what Jesus promises will happen for us as a result is: RECOVER YOUR LIFE, REAL REST, and LIVE FREELY AND LIGHTLY.

When we feel tired and worn out, God doesn’t want us to just avoid or sleep our problems away.  His solution is for us to actively and purposefully reach out to Him.  When we make it a priority to give our burdens to Him, we will feel lighter and more capable of making it through.

Dear God, Thank You for Your promises to provide real rest when we are tired and worn out.  You know we can’t effectively do it on our own; please help us to see that too. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
