September 17 – Love Offering Day 17

This month we are doing a 30-day “Love Offering” study by Rachael Adams. Each day will have a verse of Scripture with an application, to not merely listen to God’s Word but DO what it says (James 1:22). From Rachael: “Time spent with God and time spent serving those around us, changes the condition of our own hearts in the process. Our faith in action creates a chain reaction of full hearts and eternal impacts.” Click HERE to visit the “Love Offering” website for more resources and a daily calendar of applications. Please use the comment section of our website to share your stories on what God is doing through the daily applications.

You can join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We are excited to be starting our 5th year of the Discover One Thing online study!

Scripture: 1 John 4:7-8 (Context vs. 7-21)

God’s Love and Ours

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.
God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 17 This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
19 We love because he first loved us. 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.

Application: Offer a hug.

Scripture

1 John 4:7-8

Observation

This chapter is all about love: God’s love for us, our love for God, our love for other people.  The practical application of love can have different definitions, though.  Take The 5 Love Languages book, for example, which demonstrates that different people with different personalities express and receive love in different ways, such as Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, and Physical Touch.  Love is something that we are responsible to develop, especially when the acts of love that are meaningful to others do not come naturally to us.

Application

Today’s application is to offer a hug.  I find it ironic that this is the application I get to blog on. It is an inside joke between my husband and me, as well as among some members of our family who are not “natural huggers” about how hard it is to offer hugs to those we love (spouses, children) who desperately want hugs. I guess in some ways, the simple, seemingly insignificant act of offering a hug can be a selfless act of love toward others and something I need to make a priority!

Prayer

Dear God, Thank You for the reminder to show love to my family through hugs.  Even though I don’t enjoy hugs, I need to be more selfless and give hugs away to those who need them.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
