September 7 – Love Offering Day 7

This month we are doing a 30-day “Love Offering” study by Rachael Adams. Each day will have a verse of Scripture with an application, to not merely listen to God’s Word but DO what it says (James 1:22). From Rachael: “Time spent with God and time spent serving those around us, changes the condition of our own hearts in the process. Our faith in action creates a chain reaction of full hearts and eternal impacts.” Click HERE to visit the “Love Offering” website for more resources and a daily calendar of applications. Please use the comment section of our website to share your stories on what God is doing through the daily applications.

You can join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We are excited to be starting our 5th year of the Discover One Thing online study!

Scripture: Psalm 126:2 (Context Psalm 126)

A song of ascents.

When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dreamed.

Our mouths were filled with laughter,
our tongues with songs of joy.
Then it was said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”

The Lord has done great things for us,
and we are filled with joy.
Restore our fortunes, Lord,
    like streams in the Negev.
Those who sow with tears
will reap with songs of joy.
Those who go out weeping,
    carrying seed to sow,
will return with songs of joy,
    carrying sheaves with them.

Application: Make someone laugh.

Scripture

Psalm 126:1-3

Observation

Psalms 120-134 are called “Songs of Ascent.”  They were sung by the children of Israel who journeyed or ascended to the temple for the annual feasts.  Each psalm is a ‘step’ along the journey.   When Israel returned to her homeland after being exiled for almost 70 years, it was momentous!!  Psalm 126 opens with giving full credit to the Lord for bringing restoration from captivity.  When God restored the fortunes of Israel, it was so great the children of Israel felt like they were walking in a dream, or we might say, “living the dream.”  God had done great things for His people! This prompted them to respond with momentous gladness. Their joy was not fake. Their laughter not some tweak of the lips.  It was an all out slap-on-your-thighs, wide open, yawning chasm, filled with laughter.  This joy makes you laugh so hard, there is no room for anything else in your mouth!  Oh the sweetness of His joy!!!! Their joy was so all out, even the heathen acknowledged that God had done great things for Israel.

Application

Only those who have been in bondage can fully appreciate the transformation from grief and tears to joy and laughter.  Can we?   YOU BET!!!!!  God has indeed done great things for us that can bring us into momentous joy and laughter.  We can all identify with the sense of joy that comes from being delivered from our pasts, our guilt, our shame, our addictions, our sins.   May we never ever lose the sense of joy that comes from the knowledge that we have been restored and returned to God through Jesus Christ!!  It is truly a momentous occasion which should be filled with momentous laughter and joy!!!

Prayer

Oh Lord, fill my heart with the joy of knowing that You have restored me and returned me to Your side.  May my worship and praise of Your mighty deeds be unself-concsious and unrestrained!  In Jesus’ Name.
