December 15 – Names of Jesus Christmas Study Day 15

We are marking the season of preparing for Christmas this year with a family study of the Names of Jesus that will go through Christmas day. Each day of the study, we will post a Bible reading with a Name of Jesus to direct our focus, ideas for discussion with your family, and an example SOAP from our team (this study is adapted from Karen Caroe’s study). This study also has a fun paper chain to make with your family (Click HERE).

Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Then, read and discuss the verse with your family around the dinner table, in the car, before bed, or another time when you can be in intentional devotion to Jesus. We love hearing from you! Please use the comment section of our website to share your SOAP, thoughts on the verse, discussion with your family, or your favorite Christmas traditions. Join us as we build unity and community through God’s Word!

Luke 1:67-79 (NKJV) – Zacharias’ Prophecy

67 Now his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:
68 “Blessed is the Lord God of Israel,
For He has visited and redeemed His people,
69 And has raised up a horn of salvation for us
In the house of His servant David,
70 As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets,
Who have been since the world began,
71 That we should be saved from our enemies
And from the hand of all who hate us,
72 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers
And to remember His holy covenant,
73 The oath which He swore to our father Abraham:
74 To grant us that we,
Being delivered from the hand of our enemies,
Might serve Him without fear,
75 In holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.
76 “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest;
For you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways,
77 To give knowledge of salvation to His people
By the remission of their sins,

78 Through the tender mercy of our God,
With which the Dayspring from on high has visited us;

79 To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death,
To guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Discussion Ideas

What does dayspring mean? Who is Zacharias (Zechariah in NIV) and how is he part of the Christmas story? Read the rest of his story in Luke 1:5-25. What other names does Zacharias use for Jesus in Luke 1:68-79?

SOAP Note

Dayspring | Dyea Rowland

Scripture

Luke 1:78

Observation

As Zechariah sang his song to make ready a people for our Lord’s coming, he sang about his own son John that God was sending as well, a son to prepare the way and to ready the hearts to accept Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

Application

I looked up the word “dayspring”, and according to the web’s definition it means “dawn”. I found other synonyms for the word, such as the beginning of day, beginning of a new era or order of things. I can’t help but think of the words separated (yet one) “day”, bringing forth light, and “spring”, bringing forth water; the living water, if you will? All these words define You; You are the beginning, the Son, the light in the dark, and the living water. As John prepared the way then, and continues to do so today, let me sing a day song of how we are about to celebrate Your birth. Christbirth, a dayspring.

Prayer

Father, thank You for always preparing the way. Ready my heart this season and always. In Jesus’ name…Amen.
