March 22 – Lenten Study Day 17

Lent is the 40-day period before Easter, and it is “a time for reflection, repentance, and renewal when Christians are invited to prepare themselves for the celebration of the Lord’s resurrection.” This Lent, we are doing a 40-day study from the American Bible Society to focus our time in God’s Word and prayer on His renewing power (click HERE for the reading plan). Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We love hearing from you! Please use the comment section of our website to share your SOAP, thoughts or questions on the reading, or prayer requests. Join us as we build unity and community through God’s Word!

Lord God, by your Word fill me with a spirit of hope and trust…

Hebrews 6:13-20

The Certainty of God’s Promise

13 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, 14 saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.”15 And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.
16 People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. 17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.

Scripture

Hebrews 6:18-19

Observation

God has made His promise and He will keep it, He has to. So we can cling to the hope He gives us of refuge. No matter what we’re going through, He’s there and He’s got our backs. We can turn to Him no matter what. He is our unwavering anchor to keep us safe in any storm. If we take hold of the hope of His salvation, we will have the steadiness for our souls that we need to endure.

Application

What is our anchor? Where do we turn when life gets hard? God is the best answer, but usually the last resort. Spending time in the Word, putting on our Armor, and being held accountable by other believers will help ensure that Jesus is the anchor we cling to for safety first.

Prayer

Lord God, by Your Word fill us with a spirit of hope and trust. Reveal to us what’s getting in the way, where we try to turn before turning to You. Help us then to remove them and start coming to You first in all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
