February 5 – Philemon 5

In January, we read through Paul’s letter to the Colossians, and this month we are reading Paul’s letter addressed to a specific believer in the Colossian church — Philemon– written at about the same time. Paul’s intent with this letter was to restore a broken relationship through the transforming power of the love of Christ. Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We love hearing from you! Philemon 5

because I hear about your love for all his holy people and your faith in the Lord Jesus.

Philemon 5

Paul is writing this letter from prison so can’t see with his eyes the actions of Philemon’s family, but other people have witnessed Philemon’s family’s Christ-like love and faith in Jesus.

Yesterday I had a song stuck in my head, so much so that I thought God might be trying to tell me something. I didn’t really have time to dwell on it, so I pulled up the lyrics on my phone to remind me to read later.  Then I didn’t think about it again until I sat down to journal this morning.  The song was, “Live Like That” by Sidewalk Prophets. What a perfect song to apply to this verse: “I want to live like that and give it all I have, so that everything I say and do points to You.  If love is who I am, then this is where I’ll stand, recklessly abandoned, never holding back.”

Dear God, Thank You for this reminder from the Holy Spirit to live my life in love and faith that points to You and draws people to You. I also love how You reminded me yesterday that I should listen for the Holy Spirit as a friend rather than a guilty conscience.  How appropriate that a friend may communicate their thoughts or feelings by sharing song lyrics!  I feel Your friendship and love today.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
