The Fellowship of the Believers
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
The Acts 2 Church | Marianne Toovey
What a beautiful picture of the church! There’s devotion to God’s Word, fellowship, sharing, joy, and praise. The church community described here would have built up courage in its members to endure persecution as well as boldness in their witness to others despite said persecutions. A community of people building each other up, encouraging one another, and doing life together. It sounds like a dream come true!
There are many churches out there that get it. But even so, “church” isn’t a place to go to once a week. Jesus said that when two or more are gathered in his name, he’ll be with them (Matt. 18:20). Church is anywhere, at any time, with anyone. Believers shouldn’t just be living out this passage day by day, moment by moment, no matter where we are. As much as I love my church and believe it embodies the picture in Acts 2, I need to take it with me everywhere I go.
Lord, thank You for the wonderful church I get to call home and the people who are a part of it that I call family. Please help me to remember that church is more than just 10:00am on Sundays. Help me to be this Acts 2 church at all times. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
