Lent is the 40-day period before Easter, and it is “a time for reflection, repentance, and renewal when Christians are invited to prepare themselves for the celebration of the Lord’s resurrection.” This Lent, we are doing a 40-day study from the American Bible Society to focus our time in God’s Word and prayer on His renewing power (click HERE for the reading plan). Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We love hearing from you! Please use the comment section of our website to share your SOAP, thoughts or questions on the reading, or prayer requests. Join us as we build unity and community through God’s Word!
|Lord God, by your Word fill me with your life-giving Spirit…
16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
In Step with the Spirit | Becky Newman
The Spirit gives life. There is a conflict, a choice, between walking with the Spirit, free from the law, or gratifying the desires of the flesh, slaves to sin. Though as believers we have the Spirit, it is our choice to either give in to sin and do whatever we want or walk by the Spirit following in the love of Jesus Christ. The natural results of keeping in step with the Spirit are growing fruit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control.
I am so thankful for a Helper in this world who guides my steps! I strive to follow those steps more than to give in to sin. This time with You and prayer in my morning routine aligns my steps with Yours and helps me better keep in step with the Spirit.
Lord God, by Your Word fill me with Your life-giving fruit-growing Spirit. May I stay in step with Your Spirit today and not go astray.
