Daily Archives: November 12, 2019
In November, we are spending 30 days in praise and gratitude of our Almighty God as we prepare ourselves for the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. This reading plan comes from Sarah Ann at the Proverbs 31 Mentor blog (https://proverbs31mentor.com/).
You can join us in this study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Feel free to share your SOAP in the comments too! Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you.
I am thankful for God’s character — Comforting
2 Corinthians 12:19 – Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? We have been speaking in the sight of God as those in Christ; and everything we do, dear friends, is for your strengthening.
Psalm 119:50 – My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.
Isaiah 49:13 – Shout for joy, you heavens; rejoice, you earth; burst into song, you mountains! For the Lord comforts his people and will have compassion on his afflicted ones.
2 Corinthians 1:5 – For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.
Comfort Through Peace | Shiree King
Psalm 119:50, 2 Corinthians 1:5
Suffering in this world is a guarantee, whether it be related to our choices to sin or others’ choices to sin or attacks of the enemy. God may allow situations in our life where our only comfort is found through Christ. Sometimes we think the only comfort is found in a change of circumstances, but God wants to comfort us right in the middle of our difficult circumstances.
Since we can’t always change our circumstances, and we certainly can’t avoid suffering, our solution is to seek comfort from Jesus, and He provides comfort to us through His PEACE. We can find peace in God’s Word. We can find peace through the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives. Psalm 34:14 says, “Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” I like the idea of an “active pursuit” for peace, especially when peace is all we may have to hold on to.
Dear God, Thank You for providing comfort in this messed-up world in which we live. Please show us the best way to seek the peace only You can provide. Please use us to share Your comfort and peace and hope with others around us who are suffering. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
