November 2 – Praise and Gratitude Day 2

In November, we are spending 30 days in praise and gratitude of our Almighty God as we prepare ourselves for the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. This reading plan comes from Sarah Ann at the Proverbs 31 Mentor blog (https://proverbs31mentor.com/).

You can join us in this study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Feel free to share your SOAP in the comments too! Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you.

I am thankful for God’s character — Love

Psalm 36:7 – How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
Psalm 42:8 – By day the Lord commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.
1 John 3:1 – See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

God Commands His Love | Kathy Page

Psalm 42:8

This Psalm was written during the time of the Jewish Festivals by the Sons of Korah who were temple musicians. The writer was discouraged because he was exiled to a place far from Jerusalem and could not worship in the temple.

But, what a beautiful picture of the love of God in verse 8.  What does it mean that God directs His love?  Here it means to ‘command.’  Just like a general gives to a soldier, God commands His love to reach out to us.  His love is under direct orders to show up in our lives.

There is one more incredible thing in this verse.  This Scripture says it is by day that He commands His love.  Do you remember your parents ever saying, or perhaps you have said this about your kids, “My children are wonderful especially when they are asleep.”  It is easy to feel a warmth and love for our children when they fall asleep.  The messes, conflicts and misbehaviors of the day are done.   In that sense, it would be easy for God to love us at night.  But that is not the case.  He commands His love by day when we are awake.  While we are up and doing whatever we are doing, the good, the bad and the ugly, He commands His love for us.   What a comforting thought.  It is all based upon God’s love and not our performance.  At night, that love that sustained us through the day becomes a song in our hearts, a prayer directed to our God of infinite, incomprehensible love.

Let this truth bring you into His presence.  Spend some quality time with the One who truly loves you and wants to be with you.  Let His love flow into you and be the vessel that love flows out into the lives of all those He puts in front of you.

Father, thank You for Your love letter – Your Word, to us.  In it, we see You are love, the very embodiment of that which You teach us to feel and practice.  It is also seen in our attitudes which is made visible by our words and actions.  We are amazed at Your love and we rely on it for our salvation, our daily existence, our present and eternal future.  We express our love to You by giving You our whole beings.  Thank You for Your incomprehensible love, commanded to us.  May this love in us always be a song, a prayer to You, the God of our lives.  In Jesus’ Name.
