October 9 – God’s Promises Day 9

Join us in October as we do a 31-day theme study in God’s promises from the Bible. Shannon from the Sweet Blessings blog put this reading plan together. Check it out HERE.

You can join us in this study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Feel free to share your SOAP in the comments too! Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We are excited to be starting our 5th year of the Discover One Thing online study!

Scripture: Deuteronomy 26:16-19

Follow the Lord’s Commands

16 The Lord your God commands you this day to follow these decrees and laws; carefully observe them with all your heart and with all your soul. 17 You have declared this day that the Lord is your God and that you will walk in obedience to him, that you will keep his decrees, commands and laws—that you will listen to him. 18 And the Lord has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession as he promised, and that you are to keep all his commands. 19 He has declared that he will set you in praise, fame and honor high above all the nations he has made and that you will be a people holy to the Lord your God, as he promised.

Deuteronomy 26:16-19

My bible notes say that Moses summarized the contents of the covenant in these verses. He reminded the people that the Lord was commanding them to be obedient to His law and statutes. Moses repeated the word “today” several times in this discourse. This word could have been used to draw the attention of the younger generation to the magnitude of the promise now being fulfilled.

The people had wandered for 40 years in the wilderness; however, they were going to cross the Jordan River shortly. Moses highlighted the fact that today the Lord was calling them to listen and obey His commands, and today He was promising them abundant blessing if they obeyed those commands. The time for waiting was over; the time for action had come.
Right now my husband is looking for another job, some of them out of state. My prayer every day is God’s will be done on this and not ours. God knows the big picture of our lives and what’s best for us.

Dear Father, please help us to trust and obey You. Help us to listen to what You tell us. And let us be ok with anything that happens. Please help us put You in complete control of all parts of our lives. Amen.
