October 8 – God’s Promises Day 8

Join us in October as we do a 31-day theme study in God’s promises from the Bible. Shannon from the Sweet Blessings blog put this reading plan together. Check it out HERE.

You can join us in this study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Feel free to share your SOAP in the comments too! Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We are excited to be starting our 5th year of the Discover One Thing online study!

Scripture: 2 Peter 1:2-4 (Context vs. 1-11)

Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,
To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:

Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.
10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Know God | Shiree King

2 Peter 1:2-4

Knowing God is the key to “everything we need for a godly life.”  We come to “knowledge of Him” through His Word, through prayer, and through community with fellow believers.

Through just these 3 verses, God promises grace, peace, life, godliness, participation in His divine nature, and escape of worldly corruption.  Our responsibility is to know Him.  Yet, in practicality, we are willing to try almost anything except knowing Him.  We trust in the latest self-help books; we trust in ourselves and our perspective; we trust in other people. The enemy has so many bright shiny distractions for us that just lead to emptiness.  We have to fight the culture and our own self-centered inclinations to truly know God.

Dear God, Thank You for promising so many benefits and for providing a simple avenue to knowing You.  Please forgive us for being so easily distracted with others and ourselves that we resist so many opportunities to know You. Thank you for redirecting us.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
