Daily Archives: October 3, 2019
Join us in October as we do a 31-day theme study in God’s promises from the Bible. Shannon from the Sweet Blessings blog put this reading plan together. Check it out HERE.
You can join us in this study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Feel free to share your SOAP in the comments too! Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We are excited to be starting our 5th year of the Discover One Thing online study!
Scripture: 1 John 2:24-25 (Context vs. 18-27)
Warnings Against Denying the Son
18 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth. 22 Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.
24 As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is what he promised us—eternal life.
26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. 27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.
Remain With God | Marianne Toovey
1 John 2:24-25
Just before the reassurance of God’s promise in verses 24 and 25, John warns his readers about antichrists; people trying to get us to turn from God and follow them. But if we resist the lies they’re spreading and remain faithful to the Truth found in Jesus, then we can also remain in fellowship with God and rest in His promise of eternal life.
When there’s something I don’t understand, it’s easy to hear what the world has to say about it and go from there. But God wants me to go to Him for understanding. If I do that and take His word for it (He is the Creator of the universe, after all – a pretty reliable source) I can remain faithful to His truth and continue in fellowship with Him – which doesn’t just last for my lifetime, but His!
Father, when I’m lost or confused, remind me to turn to You first. I know You can help clear things up and I trust You to lead me down the right path. Thank You for being there when I need You, ready to provide any understanding, and thank You for choosing to be my friend and spend eternity with me! I love You! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
