September 3 – Love Offering Day 3

This month we are doing a 30-day “Love Offering” study by Rachael Adams. Each day will have a verse of Scripture with an application, to not merely listen to God’s Word but DO what it says (James 1:22). From Rachael: “Time spent with God and time spent serving those around us, changes the condition of our own hearts in the process. Our faith in action creates a chain reaction of full hearts and eternal impacts.” Click HERE to visit the “Love Offering” website for more resources and a daily calendar of applications. Please use the comment section of our website to share your stories on what God is doing through the daily applications.

You can join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We are excited to be starting our 5th year of the Discover One Thing online study!

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 9:6 (vs. 6-15 for context)

Generosity Encouraged

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written:
“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;
    their righteousness endures forever.”
10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.
12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 13 Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14 And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

Application: Surprise someone with flowers.

A Matter of the Heart | Shiree King

2 Corinthians 9:6

We cannot outgive God.  He sees our hearts and motivations.  He sees our pride and humility.  It’s not so much about the “quantity” given, as much as the “quality” of our hearts’ desires and motives.

What is God calling me to sow generously today?  My initial thought is related to the Healing Journey group that I facilitate.  We just started a new session, and I have been spending a lot of my time preparing and organizing and inviting and praying (and stressing unnecessarily, I might add) for God to assemble the group of women that He desires to participate this year.  But then my second thought is related to my kids.  The time I’ve been sowing into the Healing Journey has taken away from the energy I have to sow into their lives, so they get my leftover seeds.  I need to remember that “ministry” is not more important than they are.  They are my greatest opportunity to sow generously.

Dear God, Thank You for the opportunities You give us to sow. Open our eyes to see them.  Please forgive us for the times we sow sparingly.    In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  1. Two were laid on my heart for this one, last week, even before I knew this was going to be one of our applications. But it took writing it down as my application to get me to follow through on the nudge. Both are out of state but should be receiving their flowers today. On one of them, the hardest part was writing a message on the card because I had to keep it to 200 characters! I can’t even keep this comment to 200 characters!
