September 2 – Love Offering Day 2

This month we are doing a 30-day “Love Offering” study by Rachael Adams. Each day will have a verse of Scripture with an application, to not merely listen to God’s Word but DO what it says (James 1:22). From Rachael: “Time spent with God and time spent serving those around us, changes the condition of our own hearts in the process. Our faith in action creates a chain reaction of full hearts and eternal impacts.” Click HERE to visit the “Love Offering” website for more resources and a daily calendar of applications. Please use the comment section of our website to share your stories on what God is doing through the daily applications.

You can join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We are excited to be starting our 5th year of the Discover One Thing online study!

Scripture: Acts 11:22-24 (vs. 19-30 for context)

The Church in Antioch

19 Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that broke out when Stephen was killed traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, spreading the word only among Jews. 20 Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus. 21 The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.

22 News of this reached the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. 23 When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. 24 He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.

25 Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.
27 During this time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 One of them, named Agabus, stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world. (This happened during the reign of Claudius.) 29 The disciples, as each one was able, decided to provide help for the brothers and sisters living in Judea. 30 This they did, sending their gift to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.

Application: Write a note of encouragement.

SOAP Note

Encourage One Another | Becky Newman

Scripture

Acts 11:22-24

Observation

Though Stephen being martyred was tragic, it was also God’s planned catalyst to spread the Good News. As Christians fled for their lives, they shared their testimonies of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit, and the message landed on fertile soil. Barnabas was sent to help, and he helped through encouragement of the believers who were fulfilling the Great Commission. The encouragement spurred them on, and even more were saved. Hebrews 10:24-25: “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds…encouraging one another and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Application

Write a note of encouragement. To spur one another on toward love and good deeds, we are to encourage one another. Encouragement fans the flame and keeps us persevering doing what is right and good.

Prayer

Lord, speak to me, that I may listen and hear whom You want me to encourage in Your way. May I be obedient in doing Your will.

  1. We have a TON of blank “thank you” cards, so I decided to fill one out for hubby and daughter. I did it last night and left them where they’ll find it easily.
I chose to encourage them because I watch them everyday and see how the hardness of life gets to them more than I do in anyone else.
So they’re getting a dose of encouragement to keep running the race joyfully and I pray the encouragement works!

  2. Good work, Marianne! I’m betting those extra thank you cards will continue to come in handy this month!
After my time at the feet of Jesus writing the SOAP above, He whispered to me that He had already answered my prayer before I prayed it, through an email of encouragement sent to the DOT team to spur them on earlier that day. He has the best ideas before I do! To God be the glory!

  3. Praise God! I was also the recipient of a heartfelt love-filled note of encouragement yesterday! Thank you, encourager!
