August 6 – Zechariah 3

We’re on a tour of the minor prophets for the rest of the summer: Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi. You can join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We love hearing from you! Please use the comment section of our website to share your SOAP, thoughts or questions on the reading, or prayer requests. Zechariah 3

Clean Garments for the High Priest

Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. The Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?”
Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel. The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.”
Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put fine garments on you.”
Then I said, “Put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him, while the angel of the Lord stood by.
The angel of the Lord gave this charge to Joshua: “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘If you will walk in obedience to me and keep my requirements, then you will govern my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you a place among these standing here.
“‘Listen, High Priest Joshua, you and your associates seated before you, who are men symbolic of things to come: I am going to bring my servant, the Branch. See, the stone I have set in front of Joshua! There are seven eyes on that one stone, and I will engrave an inscription on it,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will remove the sin of this land in a single day.
10 “‘In that day each of you will invite your neighbor to sit under your vine and fig tree,’ declares the Lord Almighty.”

Take Off the Dirty Clothes for Good! | Shiree King

Scripture

Zechariah 3:3-4

Observation

Like Joshua, the High Priest, we stand before God in dirty clothes, covered in the filth of our sin, with Satan right by our side, accusing and condemning us.  Satan happily reminds us of our past mistakes to make us think we can never trade in our dirty clothes for clean ones.  On our own, we can’t make our clothes clean in God’s Presence, but God can make us clean.

Application

I sometimes have a hard time leaving my past in the past.  And then I get down on myself, feeling hopeless.  It’s like putting my dirty clothes back on because my enemy told me to!  They’re so comfortable, but they stink! Jesus wants me to see the clean clothes He has set aside for me instead of accepting the dirty clothes Satan offers.

Prayer

Dear God, Thank You for caring so much about the clothes I wear.  Thank You for cleaning my dirty clothes.  I trust that You will continue to walk with me and help me to choose the clean clothes You’ve prepared.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  1. I’m a little confused. Why are there two sites?

    Like

    • The Discover One Thing ministry has two sites to provide a couple of options for daily Bible reading and journaling. The main website has more of our ministry information and follows the Bible-in-a-Year reading plan. This plan has about 20-30 minutes of daily reading. They’re taking a break this summer from posting but will be back at it in September. This site (Discover One Thing Online Study) is lighter in reading, about 5 minutes a day, and focuses on one book or one theme at a time. Both sites are under the same ministry and follow the SOAP method of Bible study from Pastor Wayne Cordeiro’s book “The Divine Mentor”.
