May 9 – Embracing Grace

This month we are seeking a deeper understanding of grace — the undeserved favor given to us by God. We are following a study by Kristy at the Organic Christian Living blog. Click HERE to go to her website for this study and dig a little deeper, with a playlist and devotions for each week of the study. You can join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We love hearing from you! Please use the comment section of our website to share your SOAP, thoughts or questions on the reading, or prayer requests. Join us as we build unity and community through God’s Word!

Embracing Grace toward the Undeserving —

Colossians 2:11-15

11 In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.
13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11

Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

1 Corinthians 6:11

Many of the sins listed in verses 9 and 10 are sins I’ve personally committed more than once. But I’ve been cleansed of all unrighteousness! These things I’ve done don’t have to define me. I have my identity as a child of God.

When my daughter misbehaves, it obviously upsets me. And to be honest, I hate having to dish out consequences. But even though she messes up from time to time, that doesn’t change the fact that I think she’s an amazing human and that I’m so proud of her and enjoy being around her. It’s the same for God. He is able to look past all the scars of sin and see a person He loves! I’ve done nothing to deserve it, but I’m sure grateful for it!

God, thank You for this message today. Thank You for looking at all my faults and still deciding that You love me and want to be a part of my life. Please help me to go out and show others this same grace You’ve extended to me (repeatedly). In Jesus’ name, Amen.
