April 10 – Lenten Study Day 36

Lent is the 40-day period before Easter, and it is “a time for reflection, repentance, and renewal when Christians are invited to prepare themselves for the celebration of the Lord’s resurrection.” This Lent, we are doing a 40-day study from the American Bible Society to focus our time in God’s Word and prayer on His renewing power (click HERE for the reading plan). Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We love hearing from you! Please use the comment section of our website to share your SOAP, thoughts or questions on the reading, or prayer requests. Join us as we build unity and community through God’s Word!

Lord God, by your Word fill me with a spirit of discipleship and commitment…

Matthew 10:34-42

34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn
“‘a man against his father,
    a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—
36     a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’
37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.
40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”

Scripture

Matthew 10:37

Observation

My bible notes that Christ never disregards or devalues family relationships. God created family and gave clear instructions throughout Scripture concerning His will for families. However, concerning Christ and devotion to Him, all else must take second place.  The first command is always to love God with all your being.

Application

It is easy to slip into a family routine, day to day stuff, and in our day to day life other people and things creep ahead of putting God first. As a mother my kids are high on my list of needing a lot of my attention. But I need to make the choice every morning when I wake up to put God first all through out the day.

Prayer

Dear Father, After our rough winter thank You so much for such beautiful weather that we have had the last few days. Thank you for family and above all thank You for You, our God. Amen.
