January 28 – Colossians 4:16-18

Welcome to 2019! This month, we are walking slowly through the book of Colossians. Paul wrote this letter to the church at Colossae, and Philemon which we’ll be reading in February,  when he was imprisoned in Rome. This book offers practical guidelines for Christian living as well as encouragement and warning. Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We love hearing from you! Please use the comment section of our website to share your SOAP, thoughts or questions on the reading, or prayer requests. Join us as we build unity and community through God’s Word!

Colossians 4:16-18

16 After this letter has been read to you, see that it is also read in the church of the Laodiceans and that you in turn read the letter from Laodicea.
17 Tell Archippus: “See to it that you complete the ministry you have received in the Lord.”
18 I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand. Remember my chains. Grace be with you.

Colossians 4:17

Archippus is addressed along with Philemon as the “to:” on the letter in Philemon 2 (we begin our study of Philemon on February 1st!). And further, he leads a house church in the vicinity of Colossae. Not sure what he was facing at this time, but whatever it was, God needed to get a message of encouragement to him pronto. God, through the power of the Holy Spirit, told Paul what to write to him to encourage him in the moment in the future when he would hear the letter. Yep, God is awesome!

I love Your almighty orchestrations! You know when we need encouragement in Your mission, and You are always faithful to provide! My favorite testimony to this Truth is a time I was feeling discouraged in my garden ministry with me being the only one showing up week after week, and I was crying out to You , literally, for workers for the harvest. At that very moment, a car pulled into the parking lot next to where I was working, and a woman rolled down her window and said she never drives this way, but she was led at the moment to turn down the road, and when she saw me working while my kids ran and played, she was led to ask if I was ok. That was my Hagar moment. You are the God who sees me — El Roi! And through the Holy Spirit moving her and then filling me, I felt peace with the whole thing. You will provide what I need when I need it to “complete” the ministry You have given me. And in the last year since that moment occurred, You have done exactly this over and over.

El Roi, thank You for Your almighty orchestrations and for Your encouragement and provision in the ministry You have called me to. As we move forward on expanding the garden work, please remind me of this Truth — You will provide what I need when I need it according to Your will to complete the task You’ve given me.
