January 23 – Colossians 4:1-3

Welcome to 2019! This month, we are walking slowly through the book of Colossians. Paul wrote this letter to the church at Colossae, and Philemon which we’ll be reading in February,  when he was imprisoned in Rome. This book offers practical guidelines for Christian living as well as encouragement and warning. Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We love hearing from you! Please use the comment section of our website to share your SOAP, thoughts or questions on the reading, or prayer requests. Join us as we build unity and community through God’s Word!

Colossians 4:1-3

Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven.

Further Instructions

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.

Colossians 4:1-2

My Bible notes: “Slavery was common in the Roman provinces of Paul’s day, even in Christian homes. The church at Colossae would have consisted of both slave owners and slaves. Though the spread of Christianity would eventually dismantle the Roman slave system, Paul gives instructions here for how to function as Christians within this deeply entrenched economic and social structure. For the purpose of application, the present day relationship of employee to employer is the closest comparison to this concept of slave to master.”

I need to pray for my employer and people I work with, instead of getting frustrated because one person or the other has been out for different reasons pretty much every day for the past 2 weeks, which puts added work on me. I need to pray for them and be thankful that I haven’t had to be out yet and just get done what I can without getting too stressed.

Dear Father, please heal everyone at work and their families from sickness and please heal my youngest who started a temperature. Thank You for a 4 day weekend for my kids and please help so the rest of us do not get sick. Please be with all of us at work as a new company took us over and there are a lot of changes coming; let us have a peace about it.
