January 20 – Colossians 3:16-17

Welcome to 2019! This month, we are walking slowly through the book of Colossians. Paul wrote this letter to the church at Colossae, and Philemon which we’ll be reading in February,  when he was imprisoned in Rome. This book offers practical guidelines for Christian living as well as encouragement and warning. Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We love hearing from you! Colossians 3:16-17

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Colossians 3:16

That’s a lot of conviction packed into a short passage! Let the richness of Christ’s message fill my life. Not anger. Not frustration or impatience. I need to fill my heart with the richness of Christ so I can teach in His wisdom.

One of the areas in which my 2019 word, grace, most needs to come into play is through my homeschooling and parenting. Why am I always so frustrated and impatient with the one I love most? And how is this constant negativity affecting her? It has to stop. Now. This constant anger is a sin and an unwelcome guest in my home, so I need to stop letting it in! Instead, I need to fill my heart with the love and peace, and yes – grace, of Jesus and let that rule my life. My thoughts and actions will be put to better use teaching my daughter to love as Jesus loved. To serve others as Jesus served. To make God a priority, not just another check mark on the to-do list. I want to be a shining example for her on this journey.

Father, I want to shut the door on my negative behavior. Help me to kick it out and keep it out. In its place, fill me with the richness of Christ so I can raise this little girl to be a strong, confident woman of God who loves You, loves others, and whose first instinct isn’t to react out of anger. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
