January 17 – Colossians 3:9-11

Welcome to 2019! This month, we are walking slowly through the book of Colossians. Paul wrote this letter to the church at Colossae, and Philemon which we’ll be reading in February,  when he was imprisoned in Rome. This book offers practical guidelines for Christian living as well as encouragement and warning. Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We love hearing from you! Please use the comment section of our website to share your SOAP, thoughts or questions on the reading, or prayer requests. Join us as we build unity and community through God’s Word!

Colossians 3:9-11

Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

We All Bleed the Same | Marianne Toovey

Colossians 3:11

In Christ, we are all equals. Social standing, skin color, gender – none of it matters. We’re all loved the same, we all earn the same reward (heaven) and we’re all held to the same standard.

It feels that in our culture’s fight for equality, that we’re actually being driven further apart. But we are all created equal and united in Christ. Maybe if we stopped focusing on what makes us different and instead work together toward the same goal – loving our neighbors as ourselves and loving God with all our heart, soul, and mind – we will feel united again. Well, the saying goes, “be the change you want to see in the world,” so I guess it begins with me.

Lord, help me to be a living example of this change. I want to be so focused on loving You and loving others that nothing else matters. I pray that love and that attitude are contagious and more and more people will live this way. Unite us, Father. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
