Welcome to 2019! This month, we are walking slowly through the book of Colossians. Paul wrote this letter to the church at Colossae, and Philemon which we’ll be reading in February, when he was imprisoned in Rome. This book offers practical guidelines for Christian living as well as encouragement and warning. Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We love hearing from you! Please use the comment section of our website to share your SOAP, thoughts or questions on the reading, or prayer requests. Join us as we build unity and community through God’s Word!
Freedom From Human Rules
16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. 18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. 19 They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.
Right Vs Wrong | Marianne Toovey
The Colossians were being faced with false teachings, and Paul is reminding them that they already have everything they need in order to find out what’s right and what’s wrong. They are connected to Christ, and in that connection are made to understand and be nourished as the body of Christ.
There are so many opinions out there about right and wrong. And everyone is so sure that their way is the right way. It can be confusing and overwhelming. But I have God’s Word in front of me, and he says all I need to do is truly believe and love with all my heart, soul, and mind. Nothing else can get me into heaven. And if anyone tries to attack me, I can turn to my Bible for the answer.
God, thank You for being the clarity in a hazy world. If I keep my eyes on You, I’ll be able to see clearly enough to make it to the other side. When I do inevitably look away, remind me of Your Truth. Help me also to accept Your grace and share it with others as we navigate this journey together. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
