January 11 – Colossians 2:8-10

Welcome to 2019! This month, we are walking slowly through the book of Colossians. Paul wrote this letter to the church at Colossae, and Philemon which we’ll be reading in February,  when he was imprisoned in Rome. This book offers practical guidelines for Christian living as well as encouragement and warning. Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We love hearing from you! Please use the comment section of our website to share your SOAP, thoughts or questions on the reading, or prayer requests. Join us as we build unity and community through God’s Word!

Colossians 2:8-10

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.

Colossians 2:10

Even though we’re believers, we can still be deceived. Why are we so drawn to what’s hollow, when we can be made full/complete in Christ?

A hollow chocolate egg at Easter is disappointing because solid chocolate is more satisfying. But we still eat the hollow one because it’s there, right in front of us and the solid chocolate egg isn’t.
If you’re not sure if you’re buying the hollow or solid, you check the label. In this case, the label is God’s Word. Don’t waste your time on the less satisfying hollow egg (the things of this world) and instead head straight for the good, solid stuff (things from God)!

Father, we want the good stuff! Help us to clearly see and read the labels so we know what’s from You rather than of the world. Give us the patience to wait for Your answer, and not just do something we may regret just because it’s there. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
