Welcome to 2019! This month, we are walking slowly through the book of Colossians. Paul wrote this letter to the church at Colossae, and Philemon which we’ll be reading in February, when he was imprisoned in Rome. This book offers practical guidelines for Christian living as well as encouragement and warning. Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We love hearing from you! Please use the comment section of our website to share your SOAP, thoughts or questions on the reading, or prayer requests. Join us as we build unity and community through God’s Word!
Paul’s Labor for the Church
27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
28 He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. 29 To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.
Accept the Gift | Shiree King
God did not reveal the “mystery” to His people that His redemption would also extend to the Gentiles until after Jesus came to earth as a man. The Christian’s “hope of glory” isn’t based on our own hard work or devotion to God, but exclusively in Jesus’s presence in our lives.
As a recovering “achiever”, I still find it hard to understand that my hope of eternal life in Christ has nothing to do with my level of effort. My obligation is to humbly acknowledge this gift that I can’t earn and to share this insight with others.
Dear God, Thank You for extending Your plan of redemption to the Gentiles so I can participate in the eternal life provided by Your Son, Jesus. Please forgive me for trying to earn this gift, help me to graciously accept it, and give me courage to share it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
