January 5 – Colossians 1:17-20

Welcome to 2019! This month, we are walking slowly through the book of Colossians. Paul wrote this letter to the church at Colossae, and Philemon which we’ll be reading in February,  when he was imprisoned in Rome. This book offers practical guidelines for Christian living as well as encouragement and warning. Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Whether it’s your first time reading the Bible or you’ve been doing daily devotions for decades, God will use this One Thing to speak to you. We love hearing from you! Colossians 1:17-20

17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Pre-Eminency | Kathy Page

Scripture

Colossians 1:17-20

Observation

Jesus Christ is before all things. He is the beginning of everything.  He is the pre-eminent sustainer in whom all things are held together.  He has the Supreme place of importance as the firstborn of all creation.  He is not only the Creator, but also the GOAL of creation – the One for whom all things have been created.  He is Everything, Creator, Sustainer, Head, Beginning, Firstborn and has supremacy over all of life.  Thus, He has the right to be Lord of those He created.  He was no mere man or angel; He was and is fully God.

Application

Preeminence – to be the first in rank or influence. As I think about Jesus’ exalted status, there ought to well up in me an appreciation for His supreme position over all things.  He is in 1st place.  When I look in the mirror, I must ask myself, “Do I acknowledge Jesus’ pre-eminence? Do I give Him first place in all I do and think? Is His character what people see as they look at me?”  Pre-eminence does not mean once a week on Sunday.  It means everyday and at all times; in everything and in all things.  Every thought, word, deed, action, desire.  He is before all things, and in Him everything is held together, He is God – pre-eminent;  1st place – in everything

Prayer

Thank You, Jesus, for the amazing grace that I may know You, the Lord of the Universe who holds all things together. Help me to weave together the strands of my life as I center my life in You, my Lord, my God, my Savior, my Sustainer, and the Lord of my life.  In Your Name, Amen.
