November 23 – 2 Corinthians 11:3-12

It is love, not knowledge, that forms the basis of Christianity. Paul wrote letters to the church at Corinth to emphasize this point and lead the Corinthians back into right relationship with God and others. Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). 2 Corinthians 11:3-12

But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough. Indeed, I consider that I am not in the least inferior to these super-apostles. Even if I am unskilled in speaking, I am not so in knowledge; indeed, in every way we have made this plain to you in all things.
Or did I commit a sin in humbling myself so that you might be exalted, because I preached God’s gospel to you free of charge? I robbed other churches by accepting support from them in order to serve you. And when I was with you and was in need, I did not burden anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied my need. So I refrained and will refrain from burdening you in any way. 10 As the truth of Christ is in me, this boasting of mine will not be silenced in the regions of Achaia. 11 And why? Because I do not love you? God knows I do!
12 And what I am doing I will continue to do, in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do.

2 Corinthians 11:6

Apparently there had been “super apostles” in Corinth (I do so hope they were wearing capes!) that made the people think less of Paul in comparison. But Paul wasn’t concerned. What he maybe lacked in showmanship, he made up for in knowledge of the Truth and the Spirit. Paul didn’t need a cape, he had God.

I love the saying that God doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies the called. Looking back on people like David, Gideon, even Mary, it’s clear to see He chooses plain, ordinary people. I’m a plain, ordinary person too – but with God at the helm, there’s nothing we can’t do! I may not be the best speaker or have the most followers on social media, but God can still use me. What I lack in popularity and influence, I make up for in knowledge of Truth and Spirit!

Father, I know there are plenty of people out there better suited for the job You called me to do, so thank You for calling me anyway. Please give me the strength, courage, and peace to pull off what You ask of me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
