It is love, not knowledge, that forms the basis of Christianity. Paul wrote letters to the church at Corinth to emphasize this point and lead the Corinthians back into right relationship with God and others. Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. 2 Corinthians 2:14-3:6
14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. 15 For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. 16 To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task? 17 Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, as those sent from God.
3 Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, like some people, letters of recommendation to you or from you? 2 You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone. 3 You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
4 Such confidence we have through Christ before God. 5 Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. 6 He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

2 Corinthians 2:16b, 3:5
Paul is seeing how his work and the work of others is changing peoples’ lives and seems astonished that God would do such great things through “normal” people, like him. But, then he is quick and careful to emphasize what God has done. God’s servants are weak in themselves; they must completely depend on Him.
My “word” for 2018 is “deeper”. When God gave me this word on 1/1/18, I made a list of areas where I wanted to go deeper: prayer, relationships, …. This week in my healing journey lesson, one statement was that Joseph learned “deeper humility and dependence” upon God during his time in prison, and I have not stopped thinking about it since. Maybe the “deeper” God wants to do in me in 2018 was completely different than what I planned … and it took me 10 months to figure that out! God wants to make deeper changes within me, where my list was mostly external and dependent upon me. If God can change me to become more deeply humble before and dependent upon Him, then I am more likely to recognize my “competence” comes from Him and not through the ugly pride that keeps trying to pop out.
Dear God, Thank You for not giving up on me and knowing me better than I know myself. Forgive me for allowing my pride and agenda to get in the way of the work You want to do in me and through me. I need Your help and guidance to go deeper in humility and dependence upon You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
