This summer, we are studying the Beatitudes that start-off Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:1-12. These ways that Jesus tells us we should act as Christians are counter-cultural, with blessings or rewards that will come in eternity, not here. We’ll be digging deeper into each of the 9 Beatitudes, looking at other verses in the Bible that describe each characteristic, Biblical characters that exude the Beatitudes, and the blessing that comes from it. Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. We love hearing from you! Please use the comment section of our website to share your SOAP, thoughts or questions on the reading, or prayer requests. Join us as we build unity and community through God’s Word!
“Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” (Matthew 5:7)
Love for Enemies
27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.
32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
Luke 6:35 | Guest Post
In my life I know a person who needed some money which I gave them and never received back, after they say they would return the money and didn’t. I heard a wise quote from someone very close to me “If you let someone borrow something, don’t expect it back, and if you get it back, bonus!” So be merciful to those who need help just like God is merciful to us. In helping those we will receive something greater being a son or daughter in Christ. Like it said in verse 35. Seeing this through my life has opened up my eyes to the fact that it’s all about mercy.
I want to be able to use this in my life; just because I give someone something doesn’t mean I need something back in return. I’m not going to go around handing out money, but I want to be able to be there for those who need help. Just like God was there for me. He gave His helping hand when I was struggling in my faith/ in my life. So if I can help someone, I want to be there for them. I just have to show mercy. In the long run, I’ll have something much better which is being a daughter in Christ.
Lord, Help me not be in my sinful ways and get greedy and expect every penny back. Help those who are in need. Help me show mercy to others just as You have shown mercy to me. Thank You for all the mercy You have shown me. Thanks for blessing me with what I have. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
