June 22 – Beatitudes Study Day 20

This summer, we are studying the Beatitudes that start-off Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:1-12. These ways that Jesus tells us we should act as Christians are counter-cultural, with blessings or rewards that will come in eternity, not here. We’ll be digging deeper into each of the 9 Beatitudes, looking at other verses in the Bible that describe each characteristic, Biblical characters that exude the Beatitudes, and the blessing that comes from it. Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. We love hearing from you! Please use the comment section of our website to share your SOAP, thoughts or questions on the reading, or prayer requests. Join us as we build unity and community through God’s Word!

“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5)

Matthew 20:20-28

A Mother’s Request

20 Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him.
21 “What is it you want?” he asked.
She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”
22 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?”
“We can,” they answered.
23 Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”
24 When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. 25 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Humble and Content Servant | Becky Newman

Scripture

Matthew 20:25-28

Observation

John and James’ mom brought up the elephant in the room of the disciples, asking what’s in this for her sons if they follow Jesus — ambition. John and James are relieved she asked the question on their minds too. Jesus’ response is gentle yet also rebuking the sin of selfishness. What they “get” for following Jesus is not a reward in this world; instead, it’s about what they “give” in this world. It’s releasing selfish ambition to let the Holy Spirit change our hearts to be more like Jesus

Application

I struggle with the opposites in verse 27. It starts with ambition — whoever wants to be great — then ends on the opposite side which is contentment and humility. I don’t think I can be in both of these places at the same time, so in between, there has to be heart change. As I serve, the ambitious drive transforms to where You want me to be — content and humble.

Prayer

I want to be where You want me to be. Please continue to change my heart to be a humble and content servant.
