January 15 – Chronological Gospels
“Come, follow me.” — Jesus (Matthew 4:19)
We are starting the new year off right by following Jesus through the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, wrapping up on Easter on April 1st. We’ll be hopping around the four gospels for a chronological perspective of Jesus’ life on earth. Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. Matthew 8Jesus Heals a Man With LeprosyWhen Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. 2 A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. 4 Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”The Faith of the Centurion5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6 “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.”7 Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?”8 The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment.Jesus Heals Many14 When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:“He took up our infirmities

Scripture
Matthew 8:13
Observation
Jesus had just remarked that the Centurion’s faith was greater than any Jew’s faith he had seen, even though the Centurion was a Gentile. The Centurion saw and had heard that Jesus had authority to call out demons and perform miraculous healings; he understood that Jesus could command the supernatural, and it would obey. Because of his great belief and knowledge of the power of Jesus, Jesus did what the Centurion petitioned and healed his servant.
Application
“Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20) The Centurion wasn’t raised in the “right” religion; he didn’t know all the scriptures or practice all the traditions, but that’s ok, because all it took was faith, and that’s all he had to offer Jesus. When I pray, sometimes I have complete belief that You’re going to answer it just like You did for the Centurion. But when it doesn’t happen immediately, my faith starts to waiver. I realize there’s the perspective of time — You created time and are above it! But I’m stuck in it. And I realize all the tiny particles You’re putting into motion to answer these prayers while working on my heart too, which can be pretty stubborn. I need to keep the faith; You’re working on it.
Prayer
Lord, help me to be steadfast in praying and open to changing to fit Your will. In my three prayers that appear to be “stuck” to me, please help me to see You moving.

Focus is coming at me in full force now!
S: Matthew 8:20-22
O: Jesus is explaining to his disciples that there is a cost that comes with following him. Even wild animals have homes, but Jesus didn’t. And even sacred traditions, even family, must be left behind because God is more important. Kind of reinforcing the first commandment that nothing should be more important to us than God, so follow Him first. Anything else is secondary.
A: We make time for the things that are important to us. It’s another focus thing. I make time in my day to exercise so I can enjoy eating more. I set responsibilities aside so that I can spend quality time with my husband. I do the same for reading! I even set aside time to focus on enhancing our homeschooling experience. All of these things are very important to me, but are they so important that I’m holding them as high, or even higher, than God? Even my family, which is what I love most, needs to wait so I can focus on God. He needs to be Number One and everything else will fall into place according to His plan. When I make God my highest priority, my thoughts, desires, and actions will be aligned with His will and suddenly the things I’m making time for are things God wants me to do!
P: God, I don’t know that I’ve done a very good job of keeping You first. I pray for Your help and guidance to shift my focus to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
