January 8 – Chronological Gospels
“Come, follow me.” — Jesus (Matthew 4:19)
We are starting the new year off right by following Jesus through the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, wrapping up on Easter on April 1st. We’ll be hopping around the four gospels for a chronological perspective of Jesus’ life on earth. Luke 3John the Baptist Prepares the WayIn the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— 2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,

Clarity & Obedience | Becky Newman
Scripture
Luke 3:2b-3
Observation
Isaiah 55:10-11 – “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is My word that goes out from My mouth: It will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” John was in a season of preparation for this moment from birth to about age 30. God called him from the wilderness and gave him a word that turned the light-switch on and propelled him to fulfill Isaiah’s prophecy and prepare the way for the Lord. Immediate clarity and obedience, but a long wait of 30 years of preparation to get there.
Application
John was in a wilderness season when You called him, but he was ready. Luke 1:15 says he was filled with the Holy Spirit even before he was born, so it’s clear that the Holy Spirit was working away on his heart for 30 years to make him ready to immediately obey when God said, “Go!” In this wilderness fog I’m in, I want to allow You to work through the Holy Spirit to make me ready when You call, to obey immediately. Your word is powerful! I want to experience Your word shooting me into action.
Prayer
Lord, I pray for clarity and obedience to Your will. May Your word never return empty but accomplish Your desire and purpose.
