January 6 – Chronological Gospels
“Come, follow me.” — Jesus (Matthew 4:19)
We are starting the new year off right by following Jesus through the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, wrapping up on Easter on April 1st. We’ll be hopping around the four gospels for a chronological perspective of Jesus’ life on earth. Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Below today’s scripture is an example SOAP from our team. We love hearing from you! Please use the comment section of our website to share your SOAP, thoughts or questions on the reading, or prayer requests. John the Baptist is fulfilling prophecy by preaching throughout the wilderness crying out for the people to repent and make way for the Messiah. As he was baptizing people, John called out the Pharisees for their ritualistic behaviors. Jesus would also later call them out for their conduct not matching their words.
Like the Pharisees, God cares about the condition of my heart, not my heritage. He longs for me to fully accept and act on His promises – to live out my faith. Too often I call myself a Christian and talk about my Bible studies, going to church every week faithfully, etc., but I’m just like those stones unless I ACT.
Father, I don’t want to be a stone; I want to be life-giving and intentional in reaching others. What has happened in my life was for a purpose, and I can use that to show others the freedom that came after I was saved by You. I want to show others the Joy, Peace and Patience only You can provide.
