April 27 – You Are Important

We are currently studying our identity through God’s eyes, looking at scriptural truths describing how God sees us as His children. Let these truths penetrate your being, as if God is speaking these words looking right at you. Hang these truths on your mirror so that you will see yourself through His eyes more than through the world’s eyes. Join our study by reading today’s scripture below and journaling about it focused on today’s truth using SOAP (click on the “What’s SOAP?” link above to learn more). Comments are always welcome on our website for questions, discussion, and accountability.

1 Peter 2:4-10

The Living Stone and a Chosen People

As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
    a chosen and precious cornerstone,
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”
Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,
“The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone,”
“A stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.”
They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

I Am Important | Becky Newman

1 Peter 2:9

The first part of today’s reading is about Jesus, the stone the builders rejected that has now become the cornerstone, as the foundation upon which the church is being built one believer stone at a time. The purpose of this church is to glorify and worship God. The believer stones in the church are further described in verse 9 as chosen, royal, holy, and belonging to God, individually important as one piece in the building of the church but also corporately important working together to praise God for what He has done for us.

I am chosen by God — You see me as important enough to Your Kingdom to choose me to believe, to open my eyes and ears to the Good News, to serve a purpose of glorifying You together with other believers.

I am royalty in Your Kingdom — As a daughter of the King, I have an important role to play to honor You in my words, actions, and thoughts and to always humbly submit to Your authority as King.

I am holy — You have placed Your Holy Spirit in me to help me and guide me because what I do is important in furthering Your Kingdom.

I belong to You — You make me feel important because I am Yours; You will never reject me, and I will always belong to You. There are a lot of people in this world right now and throughout history, and I feel so important to be chosen by You!

Thank You for choosing me! And being chosen, royal, holy, and belonging to You, help me to remember that You chose me to serve a purpose together with the church of believers to glorify and worship You. I’m sorry for the many times I’ve tried to shine the spotlight on me rather than You. Help me to change this behavior and fall into my right place always and forever under You as a daughter of the King.
