Daniel 7:15-28 – January 17

Who’s really in charge of your 2017? To start us out in our right place this new year, we’re walking with Daniel this month, learning how God crafts every detail in His plan from creation of the world and history to the smallest details in our lives. He reigns over everything, and still He loves us through every moment of our lives. Join our study by following along with the reading plan then reflecting and journaling on each day’s reading to humble yourself before Him and listen. Below is the NIV version of today’s reading followed by a SOAP journal note from one of our study leaders. If you’re wondering what SOAP is…it’s a method of Bible study that focuses on applying scripture to our every days. Read more about it on our website.

Daniel 7:15-28 – The Interpretation of the Dream

15 “I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me. 16 I approached one of those standing there and asked him the meaning of all this.
“So he told me and gave me the interpretation of these things: 17 ‘The four great beasts are four kings that will rise from the earth. 18 But the holy people of the Most High will receive the kingdom and will possess it forever—yes, for ever and ever.’
19 “Then I wanted to know the meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others and most terrifying, with its iron teeth and bronze claws—the beast that crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. 20 I also wanted to know about the ten horns on its head and about the other horn that came up, before which three of them fell—the horn that looked more imposing than the others and that had eyes and a mouth that spoke boastfully. 21 As I watched, this horn was waging war against the holy people and defeating them, 22 until the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the holy people of the Most High, and the time came when they possessed the kingdom.
23 “He gave me this explanation: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it. 24 The ten horns are ten kings who will come from this kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones; he will subdue three kings. 25 He will speak against the Most High and oppress his holy people and try to change the set times and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time.
26 “‘But the court will sit, and his power will be taken away and completely destroyed forever. 27 Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of all the kingdoms under heaven will be handed over to the holy people of the Most High. His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all rulers will worship and obey him.’
28 “This is the end of the matter. I, Daniel, was deeply troubled by my thoughts, and my face turned pale, but I kept the matter to myself.”

Everlasting Kingdom | Dyea Rowland

Daniel 7:18, 27

Daniel, extremely grieved in his spirit, anxious, and most likely afraid by the dream, needed someone to explain it to him. He asked someone (possibly an angel?!) to explain it to him, and he said that what he had dreamed actually represented kings and kingdoms. And though all of these kings and kingdoms appeared to be VERY powerful, we can rest assured by what is written in verses 18 and 27, that nobody can defeat God, that God will only allow power to “them” for a certain time. But as the Judge and the One in control, the Kingdom, the Everlasting Kingdom, will belong to Jesus and the ones who are loyal to God will forever be with Him.

I have so much to say in regards to this chapter, as a worn-out saint. I watch as prophecy is being fulfilled, with times and laws being changed, the fate of Israel being determined by “power” nations, and I could go on and on – the writing is on the wall. But my opinion doesn’t matter; only Your truth does (see Joel 3). Israel might not have a say in what their future holds here on this Earth, as I with my future; but You do. And that is what I hold on tightly to. You are the King of the Most High, who holds the Everlasting Kingdom. I have the choice to be loyal to You and believe what You say is true, and I want to serve and obey.

Father, thank You for Your literal peace this week. As that word is thrown around so loosely – knowing what Your Word says about when “they” say “peace and safety”…thank You for Truth. There is so much division, those “little horns” think they have all the power. You are the power; You are in control, and I am blessed to have been born in to this time. As history like this has never been written, big things are coming. I pray for those who are fearful of those changes, as truth and change can be scary, but I pray they draw close to You for true peace. I can’t wait for Your Everlasting Kingdom to come, to come forever and even forever. In Jesus’ name…Amen.
