Daniel 4:28-37 – January 10

Who’s really in charge of your 2017? To start us out in our right place this new year, we’re walking with Daniel this month, learning how God crafts every detail in His plan from creation of the world and history to the smallest details in our lives. He reigns over everything, and still He loves us through every moment of our lives. Join our study by following along with the reading plan then reflecting and journaling on each day’s reading to humble yourself before Him and listen. Below is the NIV version of today’s reading followed by a SOAP journal note from one of our study leaders. If you’re wondering what SOAP is…it’s a method of Bible study that focuses on applying scripture to our every days. Read more about it on our website.

Daniel 4:28-37 – The Dream Is Fulfilled

28 All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 Twelve months later, as the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 30 he said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?”
31 Even as the words were on his lips, a voice came from heaven, “This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you. 32 You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.”
33 Immediately what had been said about Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. He was driven away from people and ate grass like the ox. His body was drenched with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird.
34 At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever.
His dominion is an eternal dominion;
his kingdom endures from generation to generation.
35 All the peoples of the earth
    are regarded as nothing.
He does as he pleases
    with the powers of heaven
and the peoples of the earth.
No one can hold back his hand
or say to him: “What have you done?”
36 At the same time that my sanity was restored, my honor and splendor were returned to me for the glory of my kingdom. My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored to my throne and became even greater than before. 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven, because everything he does is right and all his ways are just. And those who walk in pride he is able to humble.

Daniel 4:30, 34

Recall verse 19 from yesterday’s reading — Daniel was troubled. Through the rest of the reading, Daniel revealed to the king that, even though He had forgiven him, if he didn’t change his ways, it would not go well for him. In verse 30, it happened; the mindset of “all glory to King Nebuchadnezzar” set in, and prophecy was fulfilled. All the glory that he wanted for himself delivered him right into a literal wilderness for seven years. But glory be to God in verse 34, where the king had his breakthrough.

Not for seven years but for a couple at least I have been in this place — avoiding all of my weaknesses, losses, and choosing to be stubborn, stuck in my own pride – wanting and taking the glory that is not mine. Even though my punishment (my own prison and bondage) was different than King Nebuchadnezzar, in a sense, it really was not any different. But with the help of this study – lifting my eyes unto heaven, seeking You…I too had my breakthrough – I had my understanding return unto me. I see the gifts and my heart’s desire that You have given me, that desire being justice, freedom from bondage and to speak truth. I know You want me to be a voice, the light, and love in this deaf, dark, and cold world.

Father, You have been patient with me, and You spoke Truth to me today. You have given me the understanding that I needed again to help me get out of my own way. I love You and give You all of the glory. Holy Spirit, empower me and take me to places and levels that You never have. I want to keep seeking You, Lord, and finding out more about me and how You wonderfully made me. I desire more breakthroughs and to have a changed heart. Jesus, in Your glorifying name, I pray…Amen.

Note: He has laid it on my heart to say these words – two or three times equals confirmation. If these words are words you needed to hear, consider it your confirmation. He had me write it in the title, as if they needed to be spoken; I just wasn’t sure where they needed to go, so I put them here.
