1 John 3:1-10 – October 22-23

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Rebecca! Please show her some love in our Comments section on the website!

The Bible is basically a compilation of love letters from our Father in heaven, His loving words breathed onto each page. Over the next several months, as we study the letters of the Bible, Galatians through Jude, I pray that You will experience His eternal love in new ways and that it will transform you. These letters were written by Christian leaders, most of them by Paul, to establish and grow the Christian Church. For us, they are filled with love and gold nuggets on living a Christian life. Join along in our study by reading today’s scripture, journaling on it using SOAP, then sharing how God spoke to you today. Below is the NIV version of today’s reading, then below that is a SOAP from one of our study leaders. The Comments section on our website is an open forum for sharing, requesting prayer, and asking questions.

1 John 3:1-10 – God’s Children and Sin

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.
Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.

Sin | Rebecca Hoyt

Scripture

1 John 3:4-5

Observation

Everybody sins, but when we ask for forgiveness and truly don’t want to do it again, we are forgiven.

Application

Everyday we have battles going on in our heads. Sinful thoughts creep in all the time. We can choose to give in to the bad or choose to combat those thoughts before we act on them and sin. We can read the Bible and pray and make the decision to give it to God first.

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to get to where I automatically send up a prayer to You in any choice I make, before any conflict. Help me make the choice everyday to do what You want me to do.
