James 1:19-27 – September 23
The Bible is basically a compilation of love letters from our Father in heaven, His loving words breathed onto each page. Over the next several months, as we study the letters of the Bible, Galatians through Jude, I pray that You will experience His eternal love in new ways and that it will transform you. These letters were written by Christian leaders, most of them by Paul, to establish and grow the Christian Church. For us, they are filled with love and gold nuggets on living a Christian life. Join along in our study by reading today’s scripture, journaling on it using SOAP, then sharing how God spoke to you today. Below is the NIV version of today’s reading, then below that is a SOAP from one of our study leaders. The Comments section on our website is an open forum for sharing, requesting prayer, and asking questions.
James 1:19-27 – Listening and Doing
19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
A Real Love For God | Dyea Rowland
The verses that lead up to verse 27 speak of how we are to be both hearers and doers of the Word. And sometimes it’s easy to think we are doing a great job. Are we?
Only You know my heart and know if I hold a real love for You and a real love for people. Just like the hearing and doing of the Word, the love for You and others goes hand in hand. You’ve just squeezed me to let me know that I fall short of keeping these things hand in hand at times. Help me show my love for You by giving my love in action — however that may look.
Father, I am also guilty of not always keeping the hearing and the doing hand in hand either. Help me iron out those wrinkles, so that I may be found wrinkle free and spotless. In Jesus’ perfect name…Amen.
