Hebrews 3 – September 3-4

The Bible is basically a compilation of love letters from our Father in heaven, His loving words breathed onto each page. Over the next several months, as we study the letters of the Bible, Galatians through Jude, I pray that You will experience His eternal love in new ways and that it will transform you. These letters were written by Christian leaders, most of them by Paul, to establish and grow the Christian Church. For us, they are filled with love and gold nuggets on living a Christian life. Join along in our study by reading today’s scripture, journaling on it using SOAP, then sharing how God spoke to you today. Below is the NIV version of today’s reading, then below that is a SOAP from one of our study leaders. The Comments section on our website is an open forum for sharing, requesting prayer, and asking questions.

Hebrews 3

Jesus Greater Than Moses

Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. “Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house,” bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.

Warning Against Unbelief

So, as the Holy Spirit says:
“Today, if you hear his voice,
    do not harden your hearts
as you did in the rebellion,
during the time of testing in the wilderness,
where your ancestors tested and tried me,
though for forty years they saw what I did.
10 That is why I was angry with that generation;
I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray,
and they have not known my ways.’
11 So I declared on oath in my anger,
‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ”
12 See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. 14 We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end. 15 As has just been said:
“Today, if you hear his voice,
    do not harden your hearts
as you did in the rebellion.”
16 Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? 17 And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed? 19 So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.

Do Not Harden Your Hearts  | Rebecca Hoyt

Hebrews 3:8, 15

My Bible says “brethren” emphasizes that the writer is addressing believers in Jesus Messiah. Believers must be careful to guard against an “evil heart of unbelief”. “Beware” stresses the sternness of this warning. Believers are to “exhort one another daily” so that their hearts will not grow “hardened” by sin. This would help prevent the tendency to stray from God’s word.

The author warns believers against making the same mistake the Israelites did by hardening their hearts to the Lord and acting according to their own will. He quotes Psalm 95:7-11 to illustrate how the Israelites grumbled against the Lord and doubted His promise even though He had delivered them during their wilderness wanderings. As a result of their unbelief, the Israelites missed their inheritance and died outside of the Promised Land.

Dear Father,

Please help me and my family not to harden our hearts to You. Please let me not get busy with other things and push You back. Please let me not make anything else more important than You. Help me to not get caught up in the things that don’t matter and miss what You have for me.

  1. Amazing that this message was today. I prayed on Thursday and asked The Lord to not allow my heart to be hardened by Satan and his attempts at doing so. After leaving group (and vomiting), I really did feel better. I sent Aaron a funny video through messenger and I texted : let’s lighten up okay? I love you.
And he replied: “really? Okay”. Then when I got home I explained that she ( who is also being tested by Satan during this time) is just trying to get us upset. We agreed and focused on our Family on Thursday night. Just thought I’d share that prayer praise with you all🙏

  2. That’s awesome, Crystal! Satan no doubt was a little PO’d about being left out!
