1 Timothy 3:14-4:10 – August 16
The Bible is basically a compilation of love letters from our Father in heaven, His loving words breathed onto each page. Over the next several months, as we study the letters of the Bible, Galatians through Jude, I pray that You will experience His eternal love in new ways and that it will transform you. These letters were written by Christian leaders, most of them by Paul, to establish and grow the Christian Church. For us, they are filled with love and gold nuggets on living a Christian life. Join along in our study by reading today’s scripture, journaling on it using SOAP, then sharing how God spoke to you today. Below is the NIV version of today’s reading, then below that is a SOAP from one of our study leaders. The Comments section on our website is an open forum for sharing, requesting prayer, and asking questions.
1 Timothy 3:14-4:10 – Reasons for Paul’s Instructions
14 Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, 15 if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. 16 Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great:
He appeared in the flesh,
was vindicated by the Spirit,
was seen by angels,
was preached among the nations,
was believed on in the world,
was taken up in glory.
4 The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. 3 They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. 4 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.
6 If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. 7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. 8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 9 This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance. 10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.
Too Many Bosses’ Lies and GMOs | Dyea Rowland
1 Timothy 4:6
There is really nothing new here that Paul hasn’t covered (not to sound cavalier). He spoke here of the last days, how all would want to rule the world. The demons would speak lies and many would believe. There would be false gospels and many would be malnourished for a lack of knowledge…makes me think also of all the genetically modified foods we consume.
Jesus, with thankfulness for Paul’s warning of what was and is to come, it helps me rest assured that I am not going crazy. I can’t make You come any faster for us nor push the pause button on the way things are going. But I can thank You for the forewarning and ask that You help me guard against all the falseness of this world and evil that is at hand. There are many that claim they are servants of You and yet speak lies and a false gospel.
Father, I pray that I can continue to preach the truth that I have received. I want to be a good minister of the Word. I pray Your truth would nourish the whole world, so that we may all be servants to You and others and not just to ourselves. I can never have “too much Jesus”, but I pray the world would want to know You and know You are enough…Amen.
