2 Thessalonians 1 – August 8

The Bible is basically a compilation of love letters from our Father in heaven, His loving words breathed onto each page. Over the next several months, as we study the letters of the Bible, Galatians through Jude, I pray that You will experience His eternal love in new ways and that it will transform you. These letters were written by Christian leaders, most of them by Paul, to establish and grow the Christian Church. For us, they are filled with love and gold nuggets on living a Christian life. Join along in our study by reading today’s scripture, journaling on it using SOAP, then sharing how God spoke to you today. Below is the NIV version of today’s reading, then below that is a SOAP from one of our study leaders. The Comments section on our website is an open forum for sharing, requesting prayer, and asking questions.

2 Thessalonians 1

Paul, Silas and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thanksgiving and Prayer

We ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing. Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.
All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might 10 on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you.
11 With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith. 12 We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Thessalonians 1:6-7

Paul’s second letter to the Thessalonians dives further into what will happen at the end of the world. My Bible notes suggest it’s because Paul heard that the church was confused by how he addressed it in his first letter in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-5:11. Today’s verses 6-7 particularly focus on the characteristic of God that He is just. Understanding our place in His creation is key in growing closer to Him, humbling ourselves under Him and trusting that He will make all things right in the end.

Being on vacation in the Colorado mountains (specifically the Sangre de Cristo mountains, translated to the Blood of Christ mountains) is the perfect opportunity to meditate on my reward in heaven. The view of the sunrise alone from my bed in the secluded cabin we rented brought the last part of verse 7 to life. But I’m still here in this world, so I guess it wasn’t Jesus and His angels coming after all. Also fitting, the name of our cabin rental is “Little Piece of Heaven”; yet, Jesus coming and the reality of heaven will be even more awesome than Colorado’s mountain majesty. In the meantime, I need to continue humbling myself below Him, within His creation, and letting Him be God so that I can continue to grow closer to Him.

Lord, I am so thankful for the opportunity for vacation with my family in my favorite place of Your creation, and getting to point all of that beauty to Your design. I’m excited for heaven! Help me to stay in my proper place in Your creation and trust that You will make all things right in the end.

  1. I already knew that Paul was an amazing man of God but as we go thru these readings, I believe it more and more. More than once I’ve caught myself saying, “I wish I had a Paul in my life!” but I do have Paul, right here on these pages!

My Bible notes that the Thessalonians believed so much in the coming return of Christ, that they quit their jobs and were just WAITING for Him to return (anyone else just imagine old men staring up at the sky?). I laughed out loud reading that, but then stopped because I know there have been times when I’ve struggled and just wished right then and there that He would come and make all of the crud disappear. But that’s exactly why Paul had to correct them, and me.
