Ephesians 6:10-24 – July 14
The Bible is basically a compilation of love letters from our Father in heaven, His loving words breathed onto each page. Over the next several months, as we study the letters of the Bible, Galatians through Jude, I pray that You will experience His eternal love in new ways and that it will transform you. These letters were written by Christian leaders, most of them by Paul, to establish and grow the Christian Church. For us, they are filled with love and gold nuggets on living a Christian life. Join along in our study by reading today’s scripture, journaling on it using SOAP, then sharing how God spoke to you today. Below is the NIV version of today’s reading, then below that is a SOAP from one of our study leaders. The Comments section on our website is an open forum for sharing, requesting prayer, and asking questions.
Ephesians 6:10-24 – The Armor of God
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.
21 Tychicus, the dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything, so that you also may know how I am and what I am doing. 22 I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage you.
23 Peace to the brothers and sisters, and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.
Going on the Offense | Becky Newman
Paul is telling us how to protect ourselves and fight against spiritual warfare by using an analogy to a warrior going into battle. Paul’s Armor of God has defensive measures — belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, feet fitted with readiness that comes from the Gospel of Peace, shield of faith, and helmet of salvation — and offensive measures — sword of the Spirit or Word of God and prayer. The defensive measures are given by God at the time of salvation and allow me to STAND (vs. 13) confidently as a child protected by my Father God, like David standing before Goliath. The offensive measures I need to choose to practice daily to make myself a strong and effective warrior for God.
Midsummer, a son with a painful screaming ear infection, busy-ness, and more that I’ve reflected on but doesn’t need to be listed here — I feel like the devil is trying to get a foothold in my heart. Everything seems to be taking extra effort lately, and I’ve felt defeated for several days. Now’s not the time to stray from Your Word. Now’s the time to go on the offense!
You will have no foothold in me or my family, Satan. My Father God protects me and protects my family, and He will win, not you. Get out!
In the Name of Jesus I pray protection over us and a re-energized offense of spending time with You in Your Word DAILY and prayer.
