Ephesians 6:1-9 – July 13

The Bible is basically a compilation of love letters from our Father in heaven, His loving words breathed onto each page. Over the next several months, as we study the letters of the Bible, Galatians through Jude, I pray that You will experience His eternal love in new ways and that it will transform you. These letters were written by Christian leaders, most of them by Paul, to establish and grow the Christian Church. For us, they are filled with love and gold nuggets on living a Christian life. Join along in our study by reading today’s scripture, journaling on it using SOAP, then sharing how God spoke to you today. Below is the NIV version of today’s reading, then below that is a SOAP from one of our study leaders. The Comments section on our website is an open forum for sharing, requesting prayer, and asking questions.

Ephesians 6:1-9 – Instructions for Christian Households

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”
Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.
And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.

A Verse for My Life | Guest Post

Ephesians 6:4

This is a great verse for my life, and what God has blessed me with. A person in my life that should be a great influence doesn’t do the responsibilities God has blessed her with. She takes advantage of many people who help her on a daily basis. She has three beautiful kids, but instead of her loving on them, she provokes them by loss of temper, favoritism, and abuse of authority. She could do many great things in her life, but she serves two masters. Her youngest and middle have big hearts, and they would be great children of God, but they choose to say inappropriate things, watch bad movies/T.V. shows, and most importantly serve two masters as well. This verse just works perfectly for this situation about how instead of taking them to church to work this problem out, she just provokes them and their ways.

This makes me feel very upset to know that three of the people I love and care about the most choose not to want a relationship with God, or push Him to the side. It’s not that two of them don’t want a relationship, it’s that the one responsible isn’t bringing them up as You have wanted. With this all in mind, God has laid on my heart to pray about healing those relationships, working out the anger she has in her life, and most importantly to take time out of my day to make sure they read one Bible verse every day. This will help me as well knowing that I can make a difference in their life. I will have God lead me to a verse, so I’m not leaning on my own understanding and doing what I feel’s right.

Thank You for giving me a verse that works so well in my life. You have hand-picked this verse for me to read. I pray that You can help me with the verses, and help me soften my heart when it comes to those people. You have put them in my life for a reason, so I can show them the way to You. There are so many people to help in the world, but have you ever just looked in your own family. Knowing that I can help the people I love just makes me happy for what God has given me.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

  1. Our guest post today is from a teenager! Yes, a teenager walking through one of the most difficult seasons we go through, but walking through it with Jesus! So awesome! Help me encourage her in her walk!

So proud of you, Guest Poster, for your boldness in sharing but most importantly that you have Jesus and aren’t afraid to show it!

  2. Yay! How fantastic! Studying God’s word. Applying it to your own life. Trying to reach those around you that God placed in your life. Maturity at its best!

I am encouraged by the “slave” portion to simply substitute the word boss. I should be working to please God each day….not my boss.
