Revelation 7:1-8 – October 28

God, please give us a fresh revelation of Jesus Christ as we study the book of Revelation!

We’ll be studying Revelation through the end of November. Please feel free to read and journal with us as often as you can, with the goal of getting to daily time at the feet of Jesus. For this study, we are using Beth Moore’s “Here and Now…There and Then” lecture series and study guide on Revelation as a resource, so you may see it referenced occasionally, or if you want to know what Ms. Moore has to say about a specific verse, just ask in the comments section on our website.

You can read the NIV version of today’s reading below or your favorite Bible version then spend some time meditating and journaling on the reading, letting God speak to you through it. We encourage use of the SOAP method of Bible study as you grow in your relationship with God. Check out the What’s SOAP tab above for more info. Also, below today’s reading is a SOAP journal entry from our team to help dive into God’s Word. And we encourage you to share your SOAP journal entry, prayer requests, or questions in the Comments section on our website.

The Discover One Thing main website continues to follow the Life Journal Reading Plan which covers the whole Bible in one year. Click HERE to check out today’s Discover One Thing post.

Revelation 7:1-8 – 144,000 Sealed

After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth to prevent any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree. Then I saw another angel coming up from the east, having the seal of the living God. He called out in a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm the land and the sea: “Do not harm the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.” Then I heard the number of those who were sealed: 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel.

From the tribe of Judah 12,000 were sealed,

from the tribe of Reuben 12,000,

from the tribe of Gad 12,000,

from the tribe of Asher 12,000,

from the tribe of Naphtali 12,000,

from the tribe of Manasseh 12,000,

from the tribe of Simeon 12,000,

from the tribe of Levi 12,000,

from the tribe of Issachar 12,000,

from the tribe of Zebulun 12,000,

from the tribe of Joseph 12,000,

from the tribe of Benjamin 12,000.

Who Are the Sealed? | Rebecca Hoyt

Revelation 7:3-4

My first thought when reading the verses is who are the 144,000 who will be sealed and not be harmed? Does it really mean that exact number, or meaning an indefinite number? My Bible says it could stand for a multiple  of a very large number and suggests 144,000 may stand for the entire church throughout history. In verse 9, he then sees a multitude. Is this everyone who has ever died for Christ? Or the ones who die at a certain time yet to come? Verse 14: “these are they who have come out of the great tribulation.” Some think it’s only Jews he’s talking about, but it also could mean the “servants of our God”. Verse 3 must include Gentile saints as well — the equal status of Gentiles and Jews in the 7 churches and Ephesians 2:11-22, and the promises associated only with the 144,000 (Revelation 9:4 and 14:1-5 talk about this).
Another question I have is in verse 14:4. These are those who did not defile themselves with woman, for they kept themselves pure. Are they all men?

I have so many questions. Some probably I will not know the answer until I get to heaven. I would love to get other people’s points of view on this and the upcoming verses when we get to them.

Thank You, dear Lord, for me learning something new every day I read my Bible. Through this Bible study and learning in the church service, I’m growing closer to you.

  1. You know, I don’t understand much of today’s reading, but I can pick out an overall theme — God’s in control.

Rebecca, thank you for being honest and sharing that you have a lot of questions. I think we all do. My Bible’s pointing me to Daniel for insight on Revelation 7. I’ve read Daniel before, but I never remembered that he had his own revelation. He asked God for it, to understand God’s ways more, and even after the vision, Daniel 12 is clear that the vision created a lot more questions for him, to the point that an angel told him he just needed to let it go. Just like sometimes worry and anxiety get us wrapped up and twisted in the details to the point we can no longer see the big picture. God, please help us not to get lost in the details, but to see Your big picture!

  2. Girls! I don’t have much time to go into it, but Becky is absolutely right and bottom line, God is in control!! The 144,000 are righteous virgin males. These saints are already in “heaven” or present with the Lord, which is what I prefer to say. The two (2) witnesses – who is believed to be Moses and Elijah and the 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes will come to this Earth and preach the everlasting gospel while God’s wrath is being poured out. And big picture, God has already taken care of this piece of it… 🙂
