Revelation 6:1-4 – October 24

God, please give us a fresh revelation of Jesus Christ as we study the book of Revelation!

We’ll be studying Revelation through the end of November. Please feel free to read and journal with us as often as you can, with the goal of getting to daily time at the feet of Jesus. For this study, we are using Beth Moore’s “Here and Now…There and Then” lecture series and study guide on Revelation as a resource, so you may see it referenced occasionally, or if you want to know what Ms. Moore has to say about a specific verse, just ask in the comments section on our website.

You can read the NIV version of today’s reading below or your favorite Bible version then spend some time meditating and journaling on the reading, letting God speak to you through it. We encourage use of the SOAP method of Bible study as you grow in your relationship with God. Check out the What’s SOAP tab above for more info. Also, below today’s reading is a SOAP journal entry from our team to help dive into God’s Word. And we encourage you to share your SOAP journal entry, prayer requests, or questions in the Comments section on our website.

The Discover One Thing main website continues to follow the Life Journal Reading Plan which covers the whole Bible in one year. Click HERE to check out today’s Discover One Thing post.

Revelation 6:1-4 – The Seals

I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.

When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!” Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword.

Revelation 6:1-2

Jesus the Lamb is the only one allowed to open the 7 seals. What a beautiful picture, there are all these fierce looking creatures and it’s the lamb who looks as if it had been slain who can open it. The first 4 of the 7 judgements have an inner unity, 4 horses in Zechariah 1:8.  The 4 horsemen represent: conquest, war, famine and death. Those 4 characterize an indefinite period before the 2nd coming, Mark 13:6-8. In my research, there are several ideas of what the first seal could mean.  A “white horse with a rider with a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.” On the basis of similarities with Revelation 19:11, some think that Christ appears here, conquering through the gospel, others think it is the white horse symbolizing conquest as one form of earthly calamities. Either Jesus or the Christian message being proclaimed throughout the world.  But the 2nd-4th riders are bearers of judgment, not salvation, and we wonder if it’s the same for the first seal also. Because an antichrist figure is by definition a counterfeit of Jesus Christ, any characteristic that identifies this first rider as the one serves equally well to identify him as the other. This could represent false prophets.

Help in discerning what is real, what to believe.

Dear God, thank You for helping me and putting wonderful people in my life to get resources to research and dig deeper into my understanding of Your Word.

  1. Anyone else wonder if these seals have already been opened? I wonder if we’ll know for sure when the judgments are unleashed, or if we’ll only know for sure when Jesus returns.

Chapter 6 is bad timing for my Beth Moore DVD to lock up again, but it did. I got to watch the intro and that’s it. One thing she points out is that Biblical prophecy is 100% accurate so far, so we should probably not bet against these events of the end times occurring. Also, there are three times as many prophecies of Jesus’ second coming as compared to Jesus’ first coming.

  2. Red, green, black and white (flags with only, but all these colors) – I don’t believe it is by accident that God uses these colors…..

Palestine (de facto state, limited recognition)
Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (de facto state, limited recognition)
    United Arab Emirates
Somaliland (de facto state, limited recognition)

  3. 1st seal (opened and in progress) – White horse – Anti-Christ (this impostor comes,Rev. 13 he gets his power, Jesus comes on His White horse, Rev. 19:11)
2nd seal (opened and in progress) – Red horse – Wars
3rd seal (opened and in progress) – Black horse – Famine
4th seal (opened and in progress) – Green/Pale horse – Death
————————————————–beginning of sorrows – not the wrath of God
5th seal (opened and in progress)- being killed for the cause of Christ – will not be able to buy or sell unless you have the mark of the beast – Martyrdom – Great Tribulation
6th seal (not opened) – Sun/Moon/Stars will be darkened the Earth will quake (Matt. 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21) and ALL eyes will see Jesus coming on the cloud
Elect will be gathered then God’s wrath will be poured out.

  4. watching, praying and reading my Bible – 2 Thessalonians 2:2-3, Matthew 24:4, Ephesians 5:6, 1 John 3:7

“And they asked him, saying, Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass? And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them. But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by. Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name’s sake.

Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.”
    ‭‭Luke‬ ‭21:7-12, 36‬ ‭KJV

“And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.”
    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭24:4-9‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you: For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows. But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them. And the gospel must first be published among all nations. But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost. Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:”
    ‭‭Mark‬ ‭13:5-14‬ ‭KJV‬‬

    • Good stuff! We read all of those gospels together not even a year ago, and I’d already forgotten this part. Exactly consistent with the seals.
