Revelation 6:1-4 – October 24
God, please give us a fresh revelation of Jesus Christ as we study the book of Revelation!
We’ll be studying Revelation through the end of November. Please feel free to read and journal with us as often as you can, with the goal of getting to daily time at the feet of Jesus. For this study, we are using Beth Moore’s “Here and Now…There and Then” lecture series and study guide on Revelation as a resource, so you may see it referenced occasionally, or if you want to know what Ms. Moore has to say about a specific verse, just ask in the comments section on our website.
You can read the NIV version of today’s reading below or your favorite Bible version then spend some time meditating and journaling on the reading, letting God speak to you through it. We encourage use of the SOAP method of Bible study as you grow in your relationship with God. Check out the What’s SOAP tab above for more info. Also, below today’s reading is a SOAP journal entry from our team to help dive into God’s Word. And we encourage you to share your SOAP journal entry, prayer requests, or questions in the Comments section on our website.
The Discover One Thing main website continues to follow the Life Journal Reading Plan which covers the whole Bible in one year. Click HERE to check out today’s Discover One Thing post.
Revelation 6:1-4 – The Seals
I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, “Come!” 2 I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.
3 When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!” 4 Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword.

Jesus the Lamb is the only one allowed to open the 7 seals. What a beautiful picture, there are all these fierce looking creatures and it’s the lamb who looks as if it had been slain who can open it. The first 4 of the 7 judgements have an inner unity, 4 horses in Zechariah 1:8. The 4 horsemen represent: conquest, war, famine and death. Those 4 characterize an indefinite period before the 2nd coming, Mark 13:6-8. In my research, there are several ideas of what the first seal could mean. A “white horse with a rider with a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.” On the basis of similarities with Revelation 19:11, some think that Christ appears here, conquering through the gospel, others think it is the white horse symbolizing conquest as one form of earthly calamities. Either Jesus or the Christian message being proclaimed throughout the world. But the 2nd-4th riders are bearers of judgment, not salvation, and we wonder if it’s the same for the first seal also. Because an antichrist figure is by definition a counterfeit of Jesus Christ, any characteristic that identifies this first rider as the one serves equally well to identify him as the other. This could represent false prophets.
Help in discerning what is real, what to believe.
Dear God, thank You for helping me and putting wonderful people in my life to get resources to research and dig deeper into my understanding of Your Word.
