Romans 12:19-21 – October 4

We are currently studying the book of Romans. You can read the NIV version below or your favorite Bible version then spend some time meditating and journaling on the reading, letting God speak to you through it. We encourage use of the SOAP method of Bible study as you grow in your relationship with God. Check out the What’s SOAP tab above for more info.

On Sundays during our study, we’d like to use the Comments section as a place to share what God’s doing in your life. We want to hear from you!

The Discover One Thing main website continues to follow the Life Journal Reading Plan which covers the whole Bible in one year. Click HERE to check out today’s Discover One Thing post.

Romans 12:19-21 – Love in Action

19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
    if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Please share with us in the Comments section on our website! We’ll use what you share to guide our discussion today.

  1. Romans 12:20,21 – – On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head”. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

    One word “compassion” – not always easy, right? Okay two words, sometimes, “patience” must come into play too. I can’t help but think of an officer that I used to work with. I do miss him, he was a classic; they even called him a classic…Every once in a while you would hear him hitting into service over the radio, “show me in service, ready to make a difference”. What a fun way to think about it, as Christians are we in-service and ready to make a difference? We’re supposed to be, God tells us so.

    Father, You have extended mercy on us, please help us extend that mercy of You on to others. In Your great name…Amen

  2. Overcome evil with good (vs. 21)! I’ve been so busy with preparation and hosting family and friends for my hubby’s Army promotion this weekend that I haven’t had a chance to read the news for several days. I’ve heard bits and pieces. Still reflecting on something Pastor Troy said in today’s sermon: what we consistently read, watch, listen to changes our perspective and personality. If the only thing I’m reading is the news every day, I’m going to be depressed and hopeless. But overcome it with good! If I’m reading God’s Word every day, then God will change my perspective and personality to reflect His. Yeah, more of that, please!
