Summer in Psalms Interactive Bible Study – July 6

Thank you for joining us for a summer in Psalms! This Bible study is intended to be interactive, as a stepping stone from reading God’s Word to journaling with Him. The Discover One Thing ministry uses the SOAP method of Bible Study (Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer) during our daily time at the feet of Jesus. To learn more, check out the “What’s SOAP?” tab above. Please read the Psalm below, let God speak to you through it, then post a response in the Comments section on our website’s home page (i.e., verse that stood out to you, observation, application, prayer, question, prayer request, response to another’s comment). Please check back! Together we can encourage one another and grow closer to God!

Psalm 36

For the director of music. Of David the servant of the Lord.

I have a message from God in my heart
    concerning the sinfulness of the wicked:
There is no fear of God
    before their eyes.

In their own eyes they flatter themselves
    too much to detect or hate their sin.
The words of their mouths are wicked and deceitful;
    they fail to act wisely or do good.
Even on their beds they plot evil;
    they commit themselves to a sinful course
    and do not reject what is wrong.

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,
    your faithfulness to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,
    your justice like the great deep.
    You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.
How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!
    People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on the abundance of your house;
    you give them drink from your river of delights.
For with you is the fountain of life;
    in your light we see light.

10 Continue your love to those who know you,
    your righteousness to the upright in heart.
11 May the foot of the proud not come against me,
    nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.
12 See how the evildoers lie fallen—
    thrown down, not able to rise!

  1. Verse 9: For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.

    Do you know someone who exudes light? It just shines from every pore on their face in radiance? I’ve been lucky enough to know several, and I believe that radiance comes from finding the “Fountain of Youth” in God, meeting with Him every day, just like Moses in the temple of meeting, to develop a deep personal faith, relationship, and dependence in God. God just took one of these home. I know he would have been joking about going out with a bang on the 4th of July; he always made you feel comfortable and loved around him by joking, and he had an incredible life-giving smile too that came from living life full under God. He was a missionary here in Omaha and reached as many people as he could for Christ, even through a 5-year battle with cancer. He wanted everyone to find this fountain of life. So blessed that we got to know him and his family when we spent several years growing together in a life group they hosted.

    Thank You for Your fountain of life! God, help me to serve You like Mark, to start to fill in the gap Mark leaves behind here on earth reaching the lost for Your glory. Help me to see the world like You do. And please wrap Your loving arms around Diane, their boys, and their grandson, that they would remember Mark’s bright light in the darkness. Please God strengthen Diane in her weakness and provide refuge. Thank You for the comfort in knowing that Mark truly achieved freedom on the 4th of July!

    This link is to a song with these verses as its lyrics. And it has a great melody that sticks in my head too. I love it when someone internalizes God’s Word and truth and turns it into a song that my kids can wake up to and sing along with.

    Hey, Becky, I just wanted you to know that I’ve recognized you as someone who exudes His light too…and humbleness and love and service. You’re a great mom and friend, and I thank you for sharing Jesus each step of the way.

  3. I was singing this song along as I read today too! It’s one of the few I can play on my guitar. Thank you for your encouragement, Lisa!

  4. Reach for the Sky!!

    Verse 5 : Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.

    — What hesitations do you have that keeps you from reaching to the sky; towards Him?
