Summer in Psalms Interactive Bible Study – June 12

This Bible study in Psalms is intended to be interactive, as a stepping stone from reading God’s Word to journaling with Him. The Discover One Thing ministry focuses on use of the SOAP method of Bible Study (Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer) during our daily time at the feet of Jesus. To learn more, check out the “What’s SOAP?” tab above. Please read the Psalm below, let God speak to You through it, then post a response in the Comments section on our website’s home page. Your response could be any of the following related to the Psalm: scripture verse that stood out to you, observation, application, prayer, question, prayer request, or response to another’s comment. And check back to see where the conversation leads us! Together we can encourage one another and grow closer to God!

The Book of Psalms contains responses to God by individuals and the community in worship. We pray through this study that all of us will focus on the majesty of God and humble ourselves before Him in worship, no matter our circumstance.

Psalm 12

For the director of music. According to sheminith. A psalm of David.

Help, Lord, for no one is faithful anymore;
    those who are loyal have vanished from the human race.
Everyone lies to their neighbor;
    they flatter with their lips
    but harbor deception in their hearts.

May the Lord silence all flattering lips
    and every boastful tongue—
those who say,
    “By our tongues we will prevail;
    our own lips will defend us—who is lord over us?”

“Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan,
    I will now arise,” says the Lord.
    “I will protect them from those who malign them.”
And the words of the Lord are flawless,
    like silver purified in a crucible,
    like gold refined seven times.

You, Lord, will keep the needy safe
    and will protect us forever from the wicked,
who freely strut about
    when what is vile is honored by the human race.

  1. Psalm 12:1
    Today I read Pslams and the first verse stuck out at me “Help, lord for no one is faithful anymore” I thought of in maybe 50-60 years this world will be all about phones and TV and all the kids will be addicted to drugs instead of the Powerful Jesus Christ and no one will be faithful we might have to HIDE our Bibles.
    WHAT
    HAS
    THIS
    WORLD
    COME
    TO???
    The second part of the scripture is “Those who are loyal have vanished from human race” so everyone is only gonna protect themselves. And all bad people will rule this world with and iron fist
    See just this week I have had a friend close to me talk about me and not in a very kind way so I’m gonna ask when you pray can you slip in there to soften my friends heart to make (him/her) realize that it doesn’t always need to be about
    1)boys
    2)drama
    A healthy Friendship is about 3 main things
    1)God
    2)Trust
    3)Love
    And if you don’t have that what do you have
    God, is a main thing in everything
    Trust, if you don’t have trust how can you know to tell them everything
    Love, you need to know that person is always on your side not just saying they are.
    Prayer,
    God I pray that you can soften my friends heart and make them realize how important friendships are and how important you are and know that we have to have you or there’s no one loyal or no one will be faithful. I pray that people can start to notice you are still here and we can still worship you and I’m glad we can still have our Bibles cause without them we have nothing.
    In your powerful name we pray,
    Amen.

  2. Verse 3 – today!

    May the Lord silence all flattering lips and every boastful tongue.

    …I pray that would happen for all the world, this very instant!! I’ve lived that life of lies, flattery and boastfulness…lies destroy and they continue to destroy. And it’s a lie if you don’t believe they do.

    Father, I am so blessed to now know and able to cling to your truth…those lies still haunt me and they forever will, until You come to make everything right. I am very cautious of even the littlest of the white lies that try and seep in to slip out, let me always be aware not to fall in to that trap again.

  3. Both of the responses above touch on something I think is important to understand in this Psalm–everyone in the human race sins (vs 1-2). We all have room to improve, but it is the Lord who will fight the battle with us if we give our sins over to Him. That means I have to know how I’m sinning, call it out as sin, and seek God to free me from it. God, I pray that You will help us not to become the “everyone” talked about in Psalm 12, and help us encourage one another to continually seek You instead of what’s honored in our world.

  4. Who freely strut about.
    when what is vile is honored by the human race.
    spoke to me today.

    We do. As a society we are very much needing more Jesus and the word and less TV,phones, celebrities, skimpy clothes and trying to keep up with the jones….just some of the things this world needs less of
