Summer in Psalms Interactive Bible Study – June 1

This Bible study in Psalms is intended to be interactive, as a stepping stone from reading God’s Word to journaling with Him. The Discover One Thing ministry focuses on use of the SOAP method of Bible Study (Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer) during our daily time at the feet of Jesus. To learn more, check out the “What’s SOAP?” tab above. Please read the Psalm below, let God speak to You through it, then post a response in the Comments section on our website’s home page. Your response could be any of the following related to the Psalm: scripture verse that stood out to you, observation, application, prayer, question, prayer request, or response to another’s comment. And check back to see where the conversation leads us! Together we can encourage one another and grow closer to God!

The Book of Psalms contains responses to God by individuals and the community in worship. We pray through this study that all of us will focus on the majesty of God and humble ourselves before Him in worship, no matter our circumstance.

Psalm 1

Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
    whatever they do prospers.

Not so the wicked!
    They are like chaff
    that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

  1. I wanna be verses 1 through 3! How about you?

  2. Becky, me too…1 through 3 makes me a friend to God, which he calls righteous. Verses 4 through 6, would make me an enemy — that alone scares me.

  3. Look at what Jeremiah 17:8 says, a re-iteration of verse 3 :

They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.

I want this water, I want to grow strong – anyone relating to these verses today or season for that matter?

  4. I need to remember vs.1 To not stand in the way of the sinner. For some reason that is jumping out at me because I sometimes try to help guide people in the “right” direction and I tend to forget that it’s not my job to judge.

  5. I want to be like 1-3 too! I really liked verse 2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord & who meditates on his law day and night. I don’t want to just know the law, I want to DELIGHT in it & I want to be thirsty to want to know more & more of it. I don’t just want to read it but meditate on God’s word everyday & grow closer to him

  6. Good God stuff! My Bible notes the verses breaking down into the choice between life and death. Vs. 1-3 are the way of life and vs. 4-6 are the way of death. The way of life: avoid destructive relationships (vs. 1), delight continually in God’s Word (vs. 2)–that word “delight” is so delicious for me too, and achieve stability and productivity (vs. 3).

God, I pray for us through this study that we would increasingly DELIGHT in Your Word!

  7. v2 stands out to me…God is reminding me over and over again lately how important my thought life is. Everything I do, every habit, every word is first a thought. Meditating on His truth is the key to living a transformed life!
